The University of the Visayas Scholarship and Discounts gives educational programs attuned to nationally and internationally accepted standards. While it nurtures academic excellence, it also works for the enhancement of high level professions and middle level careers relevant to community development and the socioeconomic needs of the country.

The Admissions Office takes charge of the processing and evaluation of the student entrance requirements, administers and interprets examinations, such as examinations of specific colleges of the University as well as standardized diagnostic, IQ, psychological or aptitude tests. The Admissions Office also identify potential scholars for recommendation to financial aid/ grants.

The University of the Visayas was founded by the late Don Vicente Gullas in 1919 and gained its university status in 1948. Today, the University of the Visayas has grown into an 8 campus, province wide system of higher education and lower level laboratory schools. The main campus is located at the downtown Cebu City area.

The university is open to students who meet its academic standards and who are personally qualified to acquire a formal education, has the personal aptitude to carry on a directed school work as expected of them culturally, emotionally, mentally and professionally. The students are expected to be socially adaptable and are proficient in the English language.

The university aims to instill in the students the culture of excellence through academic training and through a life long process of learning for the development of his leadership potentials, and for the academic enhancement of his chosen career, and to provide the academic environment and discipline to broaden the student’s perspective and prepare him for a career as a responsible and informed member of a democratic society.

The university has one of the biggest libraries in Cebu City that occupies the whole third floor of the Dona Josefina Gullas Building. The initial collection was a private collection of books from the founder, his family and close friends. Later on, volumes were added to the library. Currently, it has varied collection of books, periodicals, and nonprint materials on education, engineering, computer education, business, electronics, law, sciences, and other human interest publications.
